Mountain Static – Research

Ominous wails are juxtaposed against industrial drumming and jarring extraterrestrial transmissions in the debut album from former Tic Toc Tokyo singer, Simon Gibbs.

In an effort to create lush sonic soundscapes, the songs ultimately sound too much alike; with vocals that attempt to recapture the heyday of Gregorian chanting and fuzzy buzzy static posing as unconventional instrumentation.  There is even a half-assed yodeling imitation of Alaskan songstress Jewel.

Research is the result of Gibbs’ desire to leave the confines of pop music and “experiment”.  In theory, Research sounds like it should deliver an interesting, if not entirely innovative listen, however it falls victim to conventional songwriting and a limited imagination.
